The
2006 album from Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen
1. Hurricane (Steve Gillette)
©2006 Compass Rose Music / BMI
On a visit to the Flagler Museum in Key West, Steve picked up a copy of The Last Train to Paradise by Les Standiford, describing the worst storm surge ever to hit the American coast. The terrible hurricane of 1935 took nearly two thousand lives, and destroyed the railroad once described as the “eighth wonder of the world.”
Steve - vocal, guitar, Cindy - vocal, accordion, Nathaniel Parke - cello, Scott Petito - acoustic bass

2. The Road Through the Woods (Rudyard Kipling / Cindy Mangsen)
©2006 Compass Rose Music / BMI
Rudyard Kipling’s original poem is entitled
The Way Through the Woods
, and first came to Cindy’s attention through Peter Bellamy’s musical setting. Cindy adapted the poem and wrote a new melody.
Cindy - vocal, Pete Sutherland - piano, Jennifer Weeks - oboe, Scott Petito - acoustic bass
3. Concertina Garden Medley (traditional)
Behind the Bush in the Garden / Galway Hornpipe / The Flowers of Edinburgh
A jig, a hornpipe and a reel. Don’t even think about dancing.
Cindy - concertina, Steve - guitar
4. The Kid With the Comic Book (Trevor Mills)
©2003 Compass Rose Music / BMI
Steve heard Trevor Mills, an imaginative young songwriter from Canada, sing this at the Kerrville Folk Festival. We love its quirky, sweet vision of the cosmos.
Steve - vocal, guitar, Cindy - vocal, banjo, Pete Sutherland - fiddle, Scott Petito - acoustic bass
5. Odd Man Out (Lou & Peter Berryman)
©1998 L & P Berryman / BMI
Listen carefully.
Steve - vocal, guitar, Cindy - vocal, concertina
6. High Cotton (Jack Williams)
©2005 Jack Williams / BMI
Jack is one of our favorite songwriters, and an inspiring guitarist. Glad he could join us on his song.
Cindy - vocal, guitar, Jack Williams - guitar

7. Mr. O’Reilly (Steve Gillette)
©2000 Compass Rose Music / BMI
Steve found himself in a workshop at the Winnipeg Folk Festival entitled “Songs I Wouldn’t Sing for My Mother.” We like to think she’d have loved this one, although she might have said it’s a little “racy.”
Steve - vocal, guitar, percussion, Cindy - vocal, Jack Williams - guitar
8. Nola (Felix Arndt) (Public Domain)
Cindy heard Greg Mirken play this 1915 tune on his concertina a few years ago,
and she took it on as a challenge. Now she needs a new goal.
Cindy - concertina, Steve - guitar
9. J’Entends le Moulin / Two- Step d’Armand (traditional/Graham Townsend)
We learned “J’Entends le Moulin” from the trio Nightingale (if you haven’t heard them, you must). It’s one of those infectious Quebec songs whose lyrics (involving a carpenter, his girlfriend, and her astonishing pigeon pate) verge on the surreal. We follow the song with a snippet from “Two-Step d’Armand,” which came to us through Donna Hebert and her group
Chanterelle.
Steve - vocals, guitar, fiddle, feet, Cindy - vocals, accordion, Pete Sutherland - piano
10. The Vermont Waltz (Steve Gillette)
©2006 Compass Rose Music / BMI
String quartet arrangement by Pete Sutherland.
Steve’s approach to a lovesong to our home state from the direction of the New England contradance tradition. This calls to mind the Berryman’s classic, “Your State’s Name Here.”
Steve - vocal, guitar, Cindy - vocal, Pete Sutherland - piano, violins, Nathaniel Parke -cellos
11. Homelessness (Lou & Peter Berryman)
© 2004 L & P Berryman / BMI
Lou & Peter wrote this for a transitional housing benefit concert in Madison, Wisconsin.
It’s a gentle reminder that we’re all in the same tippy boat.
Steve - vocal, guitar, Cindy - vocal, guitar & concertina, Jennifer Weeks - oboe
12. Darkness Comes (Brian Cutean, additional lyrics by Steve Gillette)
© 1994 Compass Rose Music / BMI
Steve’s interpretation of the issues encountered in Brian’s haunting song.
Is it about transcendence, enlightenment, or simply the power of love?
Steve - vocal, guitar, Cindy - vocal, Jack Williams - guitar, Scott Petito - acoustic bass
